Henderson 16-Year-Old Missing Since Saturday

BOULDER CITY, Nev.  -- An intense search is underway for a missing 16-year-old who was last seen Saturday when he was hiking at Lake Mead. Rescuers are concerned about the triple-digit heat in the area.

"You may be fit but this weather 100 or 110 degrees is hotter than it is in town. You will go down with dehydration," said Tiege Downs, Lake Mead Fire & Rescue.

Rescuers are looking for Henderson teen Shane McNeil. They are looking in the area south of Hoover Dam along the Colorado River.

McNeil's mother reported him missing at about 10 p.m. Saturday. She had received a text message from him just after 7 p.m. saying he could see the Colorado River as he neared the Hoover dam. But when she went to pick him up at the Hoover Dam Visitor's Center, authorities say, he didn't show.

Authorities believe McNeil had been hiking in the area between Gold Strike Canyon and White Rock Canyon in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Searchers are using three helicopters, two from Las Vegas police and one from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. NPS and crews from Mohave County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue and Las Vegas Metro Police Search and Rescue are on the ground and searching the water.

Police say he is 6 feet with blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and gray shorts, and carrying a backpack, water and a couple of Bibles.

His family says he is a big fan of survivor television shows and may have been trying to challenge himself before he went missing.

"Couple of factors that are in his favor, he is 16, he's fit and he does get out to hike. He does watch those shows, it's kind of a double-edge sword. He can learn a lot from those shows but they could make him over confident," said Andrew Munoz, National Park Service.

According to the park service, the area that rangers believe McNeil may be in is a popular hiking destination. But if he decided to go off trail, he would face sheer cliff faces and loose rock.
