'Nevada Solar' is Operational Near Boulder City

A solar power generating station that builders say will be capable of supplying enough electricity to power 15,000 homes has begun operating in the Southern Nevada desert.

The 64-megawatt solar thermal plant is dubbed Nevada Solar.

It cost some $250 million and was developed by Acciona Solar Power of Madrid, Spain. It took about 16 months to build.

The company calls it the largest-capacity solar power plant built in 16 years and the third-largest of its kind in the world.

The plant covers 400 acres in the Eldorado Valley near Boulder City, about 20 miles southeast of Las Vegas. It's designed to supply power to the Nevada Power Company.

A company vice president calls solar energy a perfect fit for a region with such abundant sunshine.
