Life Jacket Event to Kick Off Safe Boating Week

Officials at Lake Mead wants everyone to wear their life jacket, and they're hoping to break a record to get that message across.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is sponsoring Ready, Set, Wear It day at the lake Saturday, May 18.

At 11 a.m., visitors at Las Vegas Boat Harbor, Katherine Landing, Cottonwood Cove and Meadview will put on their life jackets in hopes of breaking last year's world record.

People who shows up with their life jackets and plan to attend the event will get free entrance into the park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Besides the life jacket event, The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct free vessel examination, information booths and displays will be set up at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor and the Nevada Department of Wildlife will inspect life jackets.

The event is also the kickoff to National Safe Boating Week, which is May 18 through 24.

According to Lake Mead Recreational Area, eight people drowned at the Lake Mead in 2012, and none of those victims was wearing a life jacket.
